Design and technology is a practical subject which uses creativity and imagination. Design and technology is taught to all pupils regardless of their ability. Design and technology is often cross curricular and linked into different topics being learned in each year group. This enriches a child’s learning experience as it is a practical subject and they can apply prior learning to their project. Teachers at Warren Wood strive to support individual needs and enable children to achieve their full potential through appropriate challenge and questioning as well as visual aids.

Pupils at Warren Wood design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs and wants. Design and technology develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. It encourages children’s creativity and encourages them to consider their ideas and how they can be improved after discussion and research. Children are encouraged to think and work independently and collaboratively when evaluating, extending and improving their ideas.

Design and Technology involves applying knowledge and skills when designing and making products. Undertaking design and technology allows children to use a range of materials and processes and to work independently or as part of a team. This links to our RECIPE values at Warren Wood. Children will be encouraged to think of their own designs; however this will be after class discussions and sharing ideas together. This links to collaboration in our RECIPE.
